Have you ever thought about joining a co-working space? They are suitable for all kinds of business needs, whether you’re a freelancer or part of a company.

As with anything in business, there are a number of pros and cons depending on your specific needs. Here we’re going to take a look at the pros and cons to give more insight into whether co-working will work for you.

Pros:

  • Flexibility: Co-working spaces offer flexibility for your working day – choose the days you want to be in an office space, and book online. With dedicated desks, meeting rooms and quiet spaces, you can move around depending on what you need.
  • Cost Savings: For smaller businesses that don’t need a lot of space, renting out co-working desks can be more cost-effective than renting out a larger office space.
  • Community: For those who are self-employed, or who generally work remotely only, there can be days where you don’t speak to anyone outside of those you live with. (Speaking to nobody if living alone!) Working in a collaborative space allows you to communicate and network with others – including those you might not have met otherwise!
  • Networking: Alongside community, co-working spaces bring more opportunities for networking and connecting with people for work purposes. Work alongside different businesses and knowledge-share.
  • Amenities: Co-working spaces generally offer communal amenities such as a kitchen area, private booths, bicycle storage, lounging areas, secure wi-fi, printers and meeting rooms. You may also get access to networking and other events run within the space.

Cons:

  • Distractions: If you’re not used to working alongside others or in an office space, co-working spaces may feel a little noisy and distracting at first. (That’s why it’s important to have breakout areas to provide quiet spaces!)
  • Lack of Control: You may not have as much control over your work environment as you would in a traditional office. This can vary depending on the type of space you rent, whether you are hot-desking or have a dedicated space.
  • Privacy: Co-working spaces are typically open-plan offices, so you will be mixed in with people from other companies in the main area. This is managed through the availability of breakout areas and private meeting rooms.

Generally, the pros of coworking spaces do outweigh the cons for most people and businesses. They are great for those looking for flexible, affordable, and collaborative work environments.
